Tales and Trails

Join us for an hour-long story time and trail exploration just for preschoolers. Learn about the local animals that live in the habitats on the wildlife refuge - and maybe even spot a few! Come dressed for the outdoors.

September 13, 2017 - Searching the Butterfly Garden

Learn all about the life of a butterfly. Listen to the story of  “Clara Caterpillar” and meet some real caterpillars found on the wildlife refuge. Then head out to the butterfly garden to learn about the special plants that help feed caterpillars and butterflies. Can you spot a tiny monarch egg hidden in the milkweed?

October 4, 2017 - Who is in the Wetlands?

What kinds of animals live in the wetlands? Join us while we read the book “Jump Frog Jump” and learn about the journey from tadpole to frog. Then head down to the wetlands to explore! Can you spot a frog? How about a water bug?

November 1, 2017 - Seed Safari in the Meadow

The leaves are changing color and the days are getting colder. It’s time to harvest the yummy things that are left in our gardens! Listen to the story “I’m a Seed” and learn about what it takes for a seed to grow into a plant. Come for a walk through the meadow to look for different seeds—some float with the wind, some pop when you touch them!

December 6, 2017 - Owls in the Forest

What’s it like being a baby owl? Join us while we read the story “Owl Babies” and learn about how owls see, hear, and catch their food. Then head out to the forest to search for different animal homes - will we find an owl’s nesting spot? Meet a special animal guest at the end of our adventure!

January 3, 2018 - Signs of Animals on the Refuge

How do animals keep warm in winter? Come listen to the story “The Mitten” and learn about what different local animals do during the winter. Then head out onto our nature path to look for signs of these critters. Will we find rabbit tracks in the snow or signs of a raccoon meal?
