Mushrooms for Beginners
Learn all about wild mushrooms and how to identify local species that grow on Prudence Island. This is a great beginner program! Joe Metzen of Audubon, our mushroom guide for the day, will give a presentation on mushrooms, background history, and tips on working with field guides. After lunch, hike in the woods to see what mushrooms can be found. If time allows, participants will also tour Prudence Island by van and discover some of the island's unique historical and cultural sights. Due to limited space, registration is required.
You will be greeted upon arrival to the island by educators from the Narragansett Bay Research Reserve who will transport you for the day in a passenger van. What to Bring: lunch/drinks for the day, insect repellent, sunblock, and comfortable walking shoes. Ferry and Parking: Participants will depart on the 9:45 am ferry out of Bristol, RI arriving on Prudence Island at 10:15 am. Departure from Prudence Island will be at 4:15 pm, returning to Bristol at 4:45 pm. There is a free municipal parking lot in Bristol near the intersection of Church Street & Thames Street. Ferry ticket cost is approximately $12, but is subject to change.
